So you’re wondering if there is anyway you can get that stubborn stain out and return your marble to its full beauty. The good news is you might be able to get the stain out without calling in a professional. Be warned, this takes patience and testing but the reward of stain free marble is worth it.
What type of marble stain can I remove?
Rust Stain Removal
You need to look for a rust remover that is non-acidic. Having a neutral pH balance is crucial to not making the problem worse. I suggest testing in a small area first. Corners are great and we are really just looking for any impact the poultice could have on the marble. Its always better to check it in a corner than in the middle of your hallway.
Oil Stain Removal
Add Acetone or Mineral spirits. The poultice may require several applications to achieve the best result.
Organic Stain Removal
Use ammonia or 6% hydrogen peroxide. The poultice may require several applications to achieve the best result.
Ink Stain Removal
Use ammonia or 6% hydrogen peroxide. The poultice may require several applications to achieve the best result.
Water Stain Removal
Normal marble cleaner should take care of this. If it still won’t budge use the a #0000 grade fine steel wool. Lightly rub the stain using a circular motion. Eventually the water stain will rub out.
Mold Stain Removal
Look for a specially designed marble mold cleaner. A quick easy trip to the hardware store or find one on Amazon.
Etch Mark Removal
Place a small amount, a little goes a long way, of Dry Power Marble polish add a small amount of water and start rubbing the stains using a circular motion. Repeat until the etching is removed.
Marble Poultice Supply List
- Baking Soda
- Liquid Solvent
- Mixing Bowl
- Plastic Spatula
- Plastic Wrap
- Masking Tape
How to make the Marble Poultice
Place 1 cup of the special solvent into the mixing bowl. Mix in the baking soda. You should end up with a paste. If for some reason its still watery, you’ll need to add more baking soda.
Applying the Marble Poultice
Clean the surface and cover the entire surface with a 1/4 thick spread of the poultice. Lay plastic wrap over the poultice. Tape the edges of the plastic wrap. Wait 48-72 hours, seriously this takes time so don’t go checking it every 2 hours. After 48-72 hours remove the tape and plastic wrap, add some water to the poultice and remove using a plastic spatula. Clean up the poultice residue and admire your marble. Still not impressed? Try again. If the stain isn’t removed in 2-3 applications its likely you’ll need to call in a professional.
