How to Clean Slate Tile

Slate is becoming more and more popular when it comes to flooring. Slate is durable, versatile, and comes in different shades. These are some slate tile cleaning tips to help keep the floor looking good.

Basic Upkeep

Slate can be swept using a soft broom to remove any debris. The soft brush attachment of a vacuum can also be used to remove dirt off of the floor. The slate flooring can be mopped too. Warm water is mixed with soap and this can be used to remove dirt. Make sure the suds are removed and allow the floor to dry completely.

Removing Stubborn Stains

If there is still dirt and grime on the flooring a stronger cleaner can be used. A natural stone cleaner or an ammonia glass cleaner works best on the slate. A mild acidic cleaner can be used for really tough stains. Do not use a strong acid as this may discolor the slate. Alkaline cleaners are less likely to damage the floor.

Glossy Surface

A homeowner can make their slate look shiny. A small amount of linseed oil can be applied to the flooring. It will provide shine and the floor will not be damaged. Keep in mind oil attracts dirt and the flooring may need to be cleaned more frequently.

Stone Sealer

This can also make the floor glossy but it may become slippery. Use a sealer for slate or natural strength. Apply it with a paintbrush and allow it to try for at least 2 hours. If there are bare areas apply another coat of sealer. Allow the floor to dry at least 24 hours before walking on it.

These are some tips for cleaning a slate floor. Slate is durable and has a natural look. A person needs to clean the floor regularly to keep it looking its best.
